NAMABC's New Abode
Webhosting provided by www.hostmysite.com

Abode is a place of dwelling. Webhosting maybe described as a hardrive somewhere out there where you put your files or web pages. These files can be viewed using your browser by typing on the browser's URL as www.namabc.org. The last three words is called a domain name. Getting a domain name is like getting a business name in city hall. You pay some kind of license fee yearly. The physical location of your business is a space you rent in a building, separate from what you paid in city hall. With website, that space is where you put your files using an FTP (file transfer protocol) software. Someone else owned that harddrive. The business of that company is webhosting. Now, NAMABC has its own real domain name, unlike before when we have http://welcome.to/namabc as the URL. This is called a redirection. Some company receives this URL and points to another URL. Now with our new set of officers with a fresh set of visions, we got a real domain name - namabc.org.

Why do we need to pay for webhosting when we can have it gratis? If we want to project a respectable image and gain respect, we need to dress well and behave. Using the same analogy, in free hosting we encounter advertisements popping up. In geocities, 4 javascript errors show up not of our own making. Sometimes, the traffic is unbearable, and most of all, we can not perform server scripting. With paid hosting, there are several Server Scripting languages like Perl, ASP(Active Server Pages), PHP(personal home page), Python, JSP (Javascript Server Pages)that we can use. With server scripting, we can create our own Guestbook, Bulletin boards, Chatroom and database for members where each member can update his own data. With just a single website, a NAMABC member can browse information not accessible to non-members.

We are fortunate to have a webmaster who writes server scripting for a living, thus making our website functional to what we want it to be. But we need your comments for input, this is our abode. This is our home. The image we project reflects who we are. We invite you to submit your ideas to the webmaster. Like in sports we want to build a strong team. Our website is our team and you are the team players. Contribute to the team by being an active player.

NAMABC Christmas Party 2001

There were 95 attendees at this year's Christmas party, being limited to members and spouses. It was an occasion of merriment and warm greetings among members. The affair was held at Eastburne Community Center - 7435 Edmonds Street, Burnaby BC last December 1, 2001. Christmas decorations on the hall were punctuated with poinsettia flowers on every table which was given away to one lucky guest each table. The officers prepared pages of Christmas songs that were shared by everybody during group singing led alternately by Lito Alcos, Becky Magallanes and Bert Samson.
Pictures shown above are the current officers presenting the proposed project for the coming year. L TO R: Julius Lardizabal, Alex Mendez, Tony Santos, Greg Narciso, Pay abaya, Eddie Alfonso and Ed Tapia.

This year's Christmas party coincided with the Association's annual general meeting. Eddie Alfonso, the president, with the executive committee presided the meeting, summarized the activities held during the year and outlined the proposed projects for the year 2002. The treasurer, Greg Narciso, likewise read the 2001 financial statement of the Association. Other official business taken were the election of Rey Yapyuco as the new PRO to replace Emer Catapia and the approval of an executive order to allow Associate members to sign into the Association who are not Mapua alumni.

As an initial campaign for 2002 membership fee, 39 members paid their membership dues. The Executive Committee was glad to see other members, who we have not seen for a while, attend the Christmas party like Rod Santos, Chito Jambalos, Rod Desequera, Fidel Claudio and Joven Hebron to name a few. We hope to see them and other members again in our activities next year. The Association welcomed five new members: Danny Federizo, Noel Roxas, Norbert Gimenez, Mike Sevilla and Macario Calinisan.
Dinner catered by Charle's Catering was served at 7:00pm and was followed immediately by a short general meeting.

The members and their families were served with a sumptuous dinner of roast beef, cordon blue chicken and pasta by Charles' Catering. The Association provided drinks, nuts, chips and other munchies. There were singing and mostly dancing all night with music provided by Vince Crisologo. As usual, Amante Jotie was our emcee during the program and Echel Narciso with help from Norma Mayonte sold 50/50 tickets for the raffle of the Christmas gifts to all attendees. The Association subsidized half of the expenses for the Christmas party to encourage members to attend and share camaraderie between friends.
Members and their spouses enjoy the music provided by Vince Crisologo to their favorite steps of Cha-cha, Rhumba, Swing, Tango, Etc, with Sweet Music.

The Executive Committee wishes all the members and their families a very Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year. We hope that you can all join us in our activities next year.

Special thanks to all the members who attended and supported our party.

BOWLING TOURNAMENT

Xcalibur Bowling Center - February 23, 2002

NAMABC members have revived their interest in bowling after several years of inactivity. Another successful bowling tournament has been held last February 23, 2002 at Xcalibur Bowling Center in Surrey, BC.

The tournament was started at 1:30 pm. with 16 bowlers divided into 8 teams of 2 members per team. The members that played were Greg Narciso, Tony Santos, Angel Alcos, Bert Samson, Sam Quinones, Ding Torrijos, Oscar Asuncion, Ed Tapia, Rafy Santos, Ver Abarca, Eric Factor, Ray Yapyuco, Bong Banting, Tito Zamora, Eddie Alfonso and our organizer, Julius Lardizabal. Joe Pante, Pete Lopez and Jun Quinto joined in the fun but did not play bowling. Most have never bowled for years so they were rusty in the first game but eventually gained confidence and made strikes and spares in the second and third game. You can hear louder cheers as players continue to improve their games with more strikes and spares as the game progressed. The total scores for the 3 games were added and Julius put in the handicap calculations to come up with the winners.

After the game, at around 4:00 pm, burgers and fries with soft drinks and beer were served in the second floor lounge. The bowlers were joined in the party by some lovely NAMA ladies namely, Echel Narciso, Lea Santos, Fe Alcos, Mina Samson, Gloria Quinones, Lita Lopez, Marichu Torrijos, Cecille Alfonso and Vilma Lardizabal. Fe and Angel entertained the group with their fabulous Karaoke singing while eating. They were then joined by some of the best crooners from NAMA such as Bert Samson, Tito Zamora, Ding Torrijos, Sam Quinones and Eric Factor to name a few. Oscar Asuncion enlivened the group with some comedy actions while they were singing the lovely and vibrant tunes. Karaoke singing was temporarily halted for the awarding of trophies.

The following trophies were awarded to the best bowlers:

Team Awards:
Doubles Champion: Rafy Santos , Julius Lardizabal
Second Place: Oscar Asuncion, Tito Zamora
Third Place: Eddie Alfonso, Ed Tapia

Individual Awards:
High Game Scratch: Oscar Asuncion
High Game Handicap: Ding Torrijos
High Three Game Scratch: Julius Lardizabal
High Three Game Handicap: Rafy Santos

Individual Karaoke singing continued after the awards ceremony. It eventually progressed into group singing of Hey Jude, American Pie, etc and dancing till the group has to go home by 7:00 pm. Everybody had lots of fun and plans are underway to continue with the bowling tournament in the fall, probably October and November, 2002. For people who may have missed this bowling tournament, watch out for our announcement in our web site for the Fall Bowling tournament.
